A winless season refers to a regular season in which a sports team fails to win any game it plays. It represents the complete opposite of a perfect season and is often a historical low point for teams across various sports. From American football to cricket, rugby, and basketball, these seasons highlight instances of total defeat over an entire campaign.

Gridiron Football

In professional and college football, winless seasons are rare due to shorter schedules. However, several teams have made history for going 0–for–the–season.
The NFL has recorded twelve such cases, the most famous being the 2008 Detroit Lions and the 2017 Cleveland Browns, both finishing 0–16. Earlier examples include the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0–14) and the 1944 Card-Pitt, a temporary merger of the Chicago Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers during wartime.

In the arena football leagues, winless teams include the 1989 Maryland Commandos and the 2018 Lehigh Valley Steelhawks, both of whom failed to secure a single victory. In Canadian football, imperfect seasons occurred before the modern CFL era, notably the 1949 Hamilton Wildcats (0–12).

Basketball

Basketball’s long seasons make complete failure nearly impossible, though there have been notable examples of futility.
The Charlotte Bobcats (2011–12) posted the worst winning percentage (.106) in NBA history, while the 1972–73 Philadelphia 76ers held the record before them.
In the USBL, the 2001 Atlantic City Seagulls finished 0–28, marking the only winless campaign in the league.

In the British Basketball League, the 2012–13 Mersey Tigers became the first top-tier British basketball team to finish winless with a 0–33 record. Similarly, Australia’s 1988 Geelong Supercats went 0–24 in the National Basketball League season.

Association Football (Soccer)

While football leagues usually have longer schedules, some teams have endured total losing streaks.
In top-tier competition, Maccabi Nes Tziona (Israel, 1949–50) and Gibraltar Phoenix (2013–14) are infamous for losing all their matches.
Lower-tier examples include Antigua Barracuda FC (USL Pro 2013) and Longford AFC (England 2015–16), both of which folded after winless runs.

More recently, Yeni Malatyaspor of Turkey’s TFF 1. Lig (2024–25) became the first team in Turkish professional football history to lose all 38 matches of a season.

Australian Rules Football

In AFL history, St Kilda holds the record for most early winless seasons, going 0–14 (1897), 0–17 (1898–1899), and again 0–17 (1902).
Other teams such as University (1913–1914) and Fitzroy (1964) suffered similar fates.
In the AFL Women’s League (AFLW), Sydney (2022) and Gold Coast (2021) endured winless campaigns, the latter losing all nine matches.

In the SANFL, Glenelg (1921–1924) and South Adelaide (1950) are historically recognized for multiple winless seasons, reflecting early struggles of expansion clubs.

Rugby League and Rugby Union

In rugby league, winless seasons are uncommon due to the long format.
The 2018 West Wales Raiders went 0–26, setting world records for futility, including the largest loss in rugby league history — 144–0 against York City Knights.

In Super Rugby, two South African teams have recorded completely winless seasons: the 2002 Bulls (0–11) and the 2010 Lions (0–13).
In Major League Rugby (U.S.), Austin Elite (2019) and Anthem Rugby Carolina (2024–25) also finished without a win.

Cricket

In English county cricket, winless seasons are rare but historic.
Derbyshire (1884) and Derbyshire (1920) both finished with no wins, the latter losing all 17 matches.
The most drawn-out streak occurred with Northamptonshire (1935–1939), which went 99 matches without a win.
Since 2000, Leicestershire (2014) and Derbyshire (2016) have endured modern winless campaigns in the County Championship.

Ice Hockey and Esports

In ice hockey, winless streaks have occurred in smaller leagues such as Ukraine’s top division. HK Dniprovski Vovky (2007–08) lost all 30 games, setting a national record.
In esports, the Shanghai Dragons of the Overwatch League (2018) lost all 40 matches, the worst record in professional esports history before finally winning in early 2019.

Netball

The Central Pulse (2008 ANZ Championship) ended their inaugural season winless, with their only point coming from a draw caused by a leaky roof during a postponed match.
Similarly, the Adelaide Thunderbirds (2018 Suncorp Super Netball) went 0–14, enduring one of the sport’s most difficult seasons.

Legacy of Losing

Though humiliating, winless seasons often precede rebuilding eras. Teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1976) and Detroit Lions (2008) eventually became playoff contenders, proving that total defeat can lead to renewal. Across sports history, these seasons stand as cautionary tales of adversity, perseverance, and the unforgiving nature of competition.
