Kenya is known for its diverse agricultural landscape, and cash crops play a crucial role in the country’s economy by earning significant foreign exchange. These crops are mainly grown for commercial purposes and are often exported to international markets. Below is a list of some of the key cash crops grown in Kenya:


1. Tea

  • Importance: Tea is Kenya’s top foreign exchange earner, with the country being one of the leading global producers.
  • Main Growing Areas: High altitudes in regions like Kericho, Bomet, Nandi, Vihiga, Kisii, Murang’a, and Kiambu.

2. Coffee

  • Importance: Kenya is one of the world’s leading coffee producers, contributing significantly to foreign exchange earnings.
  • Varieties: The main varieties grown in Kenya are Arabica and Robusta.
  • Main Growing Areas: Coffee farms are mainly found in Central Kenya, including regions like Murang’a, Kiambu, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, and parts of Rift Valley.

3. Flowers

  • Importance: Kenya is one of the largest exporters of cut flowers, particularly roses.
  • Main Growing Areas: Nakuru, Kiambu, and Naivasha are the primary areas for flower farming.

4. Pyrethrum

  • Importance: Pyrethrum is used for making insecticides and is a valuable export crop.
  • Main Growing Areas: Grown on a small scale, primarily in Nakuru, Limuru, Molo, Sotik, Kisii, Nyamira, and parts of Kinangop.

5. Wheat

  • Importance: Wheat is essential for food production and used in making flour for bread, biscuits, and other food products.
  • Main Growing Areas: Uasin Gishu, Narok, Nakuru, and Laikipia are the leading wheat farming areas.

6. Cotton

  • Importance: Cotton is grown primarily for its fiber, which is used in the textile industry to make clothes.
  • Main Growing Areas: Siaya, Tana River, Machakos, Busia, and Homabay are known for cotton farming.

7. Maize

  • Importance: Maize is both a staple food and a cash crop. It is vital for local consumption and export.
  • Main Growing Areas: Large-scale maize farms are found in Kitale, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Nandi, Sotik, and parts of the Western region.

8. Sugarcane

  • Importance: Sugarcane is a major crop grown for the production of sugar, with sugar manufacturing companies being the primary buyers.
  • Main Growing Areas: Mumias, Kakamega, South Nyanza, Busia, Chemelil, Muhoroni, and Bungoma are the major sugarcane-growing regions.

9. Cashew Nuts

  • Importance: Cashew nuts are grown mainly for export and contribute to Kenya’s agricultural earnings.
  • Main Growing Areas: The main growing regions for cashew nuts are Taita Taveta, Tana River, Kilifi, and Kwale.

10. Sisal

  • Importance: Sisal is grown for its fiber, which is used in products like ropes, sacks, and packing materials.
  • Main Growing Areas: Kilifi and Voi are the leading regions for sisal farming.
