Mango Farming in Kenya: A Lucrative Venture
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Mango farming in Kenya is a profitable venture that has gained popularity due to the high demand for mangoes in both local and international markets. With favorable climatic conditions, Kenya offers an ideal environment for growing different varieties of mangoes, making it a promising crop for farmers looking to tap into the growing fruit market.

Mango Growing Areas in Kenya

Mangoes are predominantly grown in the eastern and coastal regions of Kenya. Some of the key mango-producing areas include:

  • Makueni
  • Machakos
  • Kitui
  • Taita Taveta
  • Embu
  • Kajiado
  • Mwea
  • Baringo
  • Thika
  • Murang’a

These areas offer the right conditions for growing mangoes, including the required temperature and rainfall.

Common Varieties of Mangoes Grown in Kenya

Kenya grows both local and exotic mango varieties. The most common varieties include:

  • Apple Mango: Known for its sweet taste and crisp texture.
  • Tommy Mango: Popular for its resistance to disease and high yield.
  • Kent Mango: A juicy variety with a sweet flavor, perfect for export.
  • Dodo Mango: A local variety that is widely consumed.
  • Boribo Mango: Known for its large size and excellent taste.
  • Batawi Mango: Another local variety favored for its sweetness.
  • Ngowe Mango: A traditional variety known for its large fruit and high market demand.

Ecological Conditions for Growing Mangoes

Mango trees thrive under specific ecological conditions:

  • Annual Rainfall: Mangoes require 850-1000 mm of rainfall annually.
  • Temperature: They grow best in a temperature range of 15°C to 30°C.
  • Soil: Mangoes prefer deep, well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5 to 7.5. The soil should be fertile to support healthy tree growth.

Land Preparation and Planting

  • Land Preparation: Mango farming begins with proper land preparation. The land should be ploughed deeply, and after ploughing, the land should be leveled with a mild slope to facilitate drainage.
  • Spacing: The recommended planting space for mango trees is 5 meters by 5 meters.
  • Propagation:
    • Indigenous Varieties: These are propagated by seeds.
    • Exotic Varieties: These are propagated by grafting (grafting a scion onto the rootstock of a local variety).
A mature mango tree yields approximately 200 to 500 fruits per season. The optimum yield begins after 4 years of planting.

Pruning

Pruning is essential for optimal mango tree growth. It involves:

  • Removing weak branches
  • Cutting back excess foliage
  • Ensuring proper air circulation

Pruning is done annually, especially after the fruiting season, to maintain tree health and increase yield.

Pests and Diseases

Mango trees are susceptible to several pests and diseases. Common pests include:

  • Thrips
  • Mango seed weevil
  • Red spider mites
  • Mealybugs
  • Mango fruit flies

Common diseases include:

  • Powdery mildew
  • Anthracnose
  • Dieback

Control Measures:

  • Use insecticides such as Emerald, Loyalty, Lexus, and Alonze to manage pests.
  • For disease control, use fungicides like Trinity Gold, Ransom, and Green Cop.
  • Proper field hygiene and the use of resistant varieties also help in pest and disease management.

Market for Mangoes in Kenya

Mangoes have a high demand in Kenya, making them one of the most popular and consumed fruits in the country. They are sold in:

  • Open-air markets
  • Supermarkets
  • Food stores

The price of mangoes varies depending on their size, quality, and variety. The market demand is high during the harvest season, and mangoes are a staple in many Kenyan households.

Export Market: Kenya’s mangoes are also in high demand in the international market, particularly in:

  • Europe
  • Middle East

Farmers can work with fresh produce exporters to supply fresh mangoes for export. The export market offers higher returns, making mango farming an even more lucrative venture.

Conclusion

Mango farming in Kenya offers a high return on investment, especially in areas with suitable climatic conditions. By selecting the right varieties, practicing good farm management techniques, and controlling pests and diseases, farmers can enjoy a profitable mango farming venture. With the growing local and international demand, mangoes present a great opportunity for farmers to meet market needs and expand their agricultural businesses.
