Oil Palm Tree Farming in Kenya

Oil palm tree farming is a relatively uncommon agricultural practice in Kenya. However, it has the potential to become a profitable venture, particularly for palm oil production, which is extracted from the reddish pulp of the oil palm tree fruit. While oil palm farming is largely done on a small scale in Kenya, it has gained some traction in specific regions with the appropriate ecological conditions.

Varieties of Oil Palm Trees Grown in Kenya:

  1. Dura: A traditional variety that is used primarily for oil extraction.
  2. Pisifera: A male variety mainly used in breeding.
  3. Tenera: A hybrid variety, resulting from a cross between Dura and Pisifera, it has a higher oil yield.
  4. Hybrid Deli: Known for its high oil production and better resistance to pests and diseases.

Ecological Conditions for Growing Oil Palm Trees:

  • Temperature: 20°C to 35°C.
  • Altitude: 500 to 600 meters above sea level.
  • Rainfall: Well-distributed rainfall of over 1000mm annually.
  • Sunlight: About 5 hours of sunlight per day.
  • Soil: Sandy loam soils, alluvial clay soils, and acidic soils with a pH of 5.5. The soil should have good water-holding capacity.

Planting of Oil Palm Trees:

  • Propagation: Oil palm trees are propagated through seeds, which are first raised in a nursery bed for 12-24 months before being transplanted to the main field.
  • Spacing: The recommended planting spacing is 7 meters by 8 meters.

Fertiliser Application:

  • While the trees are still in the nursery, it is best to apply phosphatic fertilizers such as rock phosphate, TSP, magnesium oxide, or potassium chloride to support healthy growth.

Pests and Diseases Management:

  • Pests: Common pests include aphids, thrips, armyworms, red spider mites, and mealy bugs. These can be controlled with insecticides like Confidor, Applaud, Dynamic, or Volium Targo.
  • Diseases: Leaf spot is a common disease in oil palm trees, which can be managed using fungicides like Dacomil.

Harvesting:

  • Oil palm trees take about 6 years to start yielding fruits, and they can be harvested continuously for the next 6 years.
  • Indicators of Maturity: When the fruit changes color from black to orange, it is a sign of maturity. The fall of individual fruits also indicates that they are ready for harvest.

Palm Oil Production:

  • Palm oil is extracted from the flesh of the oil palm fruit and is the most used vegetable oil globally, including in Kenya.
  • A single palm fruit can yield approximately 1 liter of palm oil.
  • Palm oil is used in various industries, including food production (cooking oil, bread), cosmetics, soaps, and other consumer products.

Market for Palm Oil in Kenya:

  • The primary users of palm oil in Kenya are oil refineries and manufacturing companies.
  • Palm oil is a key ingredient in the production of cooking oil and many processed food items.
  • Imports: Since oil palm farming is not widespread in Kenya, a significant portion of the palm oil consumed is imported from other countries, particularly from Southeast Asia, where palm oil farming is more established.

Conclusion:

Oil palm farming in Kenya, though not as common as other crops, has potential due to the growing demand for palm oil and related products. With the right climatic conditions and farming practices, it could become a profitable venture, especially as demand for palm oil continues to rise globally.
