Sweet Potato Farming in Kenya: A Lucrative Agribusiness Venture

Sweet potato farming is one of the most profitable agribusiness opportunities in Kenya. With sweet potatoes being a staple in many households, the demand remains high, offering farmers a ready and consistent market for their produce.

Popular Sweet Potato Varieties Grown in Kenya

Several varieties of sweet potatoes are cultivated in Kenya, each suited to specific ecological conditions and market preferences. Common varieties include:

  • Kemb 23
  • SPK 004
  • Kemb 10
  • KSP 20
  • CIP Selection
  • Naspato
  • Tainain
  • Kemp 36

Ideal Ecological Conditions for Sweet Potato Farming

Sweet potatoes thrive under the following conditions:

  • Rainfall: Annual precipitation of 750-1000mm.
  • Altitude: Grows best at altitudes up to 2,100m above sea level.
  • Temperature: Requires temperatures above 24°C.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained sandy loam soils with a pH of 5.6-6.6.

Propagation and Planting Techniques

Sweet potatoes can be propagated using vine cuttings or storage roots, with vine cuttings being the preferred method due to their disease resistance and higher yield potential.

Ideal Vine Size: Cuttings should be 25-30 cm long for planting.

Planting Methods:

  1. Planting on Mounds
    • Cluster planting: 4-6 vines in one spot on the mound.
    • Single stands: 3-4 vines per stand on the mound.
    • Two vines per stand for compact planting.
  2. Planting on Ridges
    • Single row planting: Sweet potato plants are placed in the middle of a ridge with 30cm spacing between plants.
    • Double row planting: Sweet potato plants are placed on opposite sides of the ridges, with 30cm spacing between plants and 50-60cm between rows.

Fertilizer Application

Sweet potato plants typically do not require fertilizers. However, in poor soil conditions, farm manure or organic manure can be used to improve soil structure and boost yields.

Harvesting

Sweet potatoes are ready for harvesting 3-6 months after planting, depending on the variety and growing conditions.

Two Harvesting Methods:

  1. Leaf Harvesting: Sweet potato leaves can be harvested as vegetables 2 months after planting.
  2. Tuber Harvesting: Tubers mature between 3-6 months, with an estimated yield of 10-20 tons per hectare.

Sweet Potato Market in Kenya

Sweet potatoes are predominantly grown for local consumption. They are sold in local markets at prices starting from Ksh 50 per piece or Ksh 3,500 per bag, depending on demand and supply dynamics.

With growing popularity and nutritional value, sweet potato farming remains a lucrative venture for Kenyan farmers, offering steady income and food security.
