Cabbage Farming in Kenya: A Guide to a Profitable Venture

Cabbage farming is one of the most lucrative agribusiness ventures in Kenya due to its high demand in local markets. Cabbages are a staple in many households and are valued for their nutritional content, including iron and calcium.

Ecological Conditions for Growing Cabbage

For optimal growth, cabbages require the following conditions:

  • Soil: Rich in organic matter, with a pH of 6.0-6.5.
  • Rainfall: Well-distributed rainfall of about 500mm annually.
  • Altitude: Grows well at 700-2,200 metres above sea level.
  • Temperature: Ideal range of 16-20°C.
  • Drainage: Requires well-drained soil to prevent waterlogging.

Propagation and Planting

Cabbages are propagated from seeds, which can either be sown directly or transplanted from a nursery.

Transplanting Guidelines:

  • Transplant seedlings when they are 10-12cm tall, typically after 4-6 weeks.
  • Spacing:
    • Large-headed varieties: 60cm by 60cm.
    • Medium-sized varieties: 60cm by 45cm.
    • Small varieties: 40cm by 30cm.

Fertilizer Application:

  • Use DAP fertilizer (75kg per acre) and farmyard manure during planting to enhance soil fertility and promote healthy growth.

Weed Control

Weeding should be done early to prevent competition for nutrients, which can significantly reduce yields. Regular weeding ensures optimal growth and productivity.

Pests and Disease Management

Common Pests:

  • Aphids
  • Sawfly
  • Diamondback moth

Common Diseases:

  • Black Rot
  • Fungal Spots
  • Bacterial Soft Rot

Control Measures:

  • Use recommended pesticides and fungicides to manage pests and diseases.
  • Maintain proper field hygiene to reduce pest and disease prevalence.

Harvesting Cabbages

Cabbages are ready for harvesting after 3 months, once the head forms.

Harvesting Tips:

  • Harvest during the morning hours when it is cool to prevent the heads from cracking.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut the heads cleanly from the stalk.

Yield: An acre of land can produce 10,000-15,000 cabbage heads, depending on the variety and growing conditions.

Market for Cabbage in Kenya

Cabbages have a strong market in Kenya, with demand driven by their nutritional value and popularity.

Key Markets:

  • Open-Air Markets: Common outlets for farmers.
  • Groceries and Supermarkets: Serve urban consumers.

Pricing: Prices vary based on the size and quality of cabbage heads, as well as market location and demand.

Cabbage farming in Kenya is a reliable and profitable agribusiness. With proper management practices, including pest control and fertilization, farmers can achieve high yields and consistent income. The ready market for cabbages ensures farmers can easily sell their produce, making it a worthwhile investment.
