Breaking News: U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman Resigns Following Trump’s Presidential Victory

Nairobi, Kenya — U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, has announced her resignation just days after Donald Trump’s presidential election victory, ending her tenure as head of the Kenyan embassy since August 2022. Appointed by outgoing President Joe Biden, Whitman expressed pride in the accomplishments of her “people-centered agenda,” which she said strengthened U.S.-Kenya relations, improved security, and boosted economic opportunities for both nations.

In a statement to her embassy team, Whitman shared her gratitude for the chance to serve the U.S. and work closely with the Kenyan government and its people. “Today, I informed my team that I submitted my resignation to President Biden,” Whitman said. “I will leave Kenya filled with gratitude for the team that has worked tirelessly on my behalf and the friendship extended by the beautiful Republic of Kenya.”

Reflecting on her tenure, Whitman highlighted key achievements, including disaster relief funding during the 2023 floods, health initiatives combating malaria, HIV, and MPOX, and bolstering Kenya’s status as the U.S.’s first Major Non-NATO ally in sub-Saharan Africa. She emphasized these efforts as a testament to the U.S.’s commitment to safeguarding shared democratic values and enhancing regional security.

Whitman also noted strides in economic diplomacy, fostering trade and investment opportunities that have brought American businesses and jobs to Kenya. “Our efforts have paved the way for American companies to invest in Kenya, creating jobs and strengthening trade,” she said.

Acknowledging the upcoming administration change in the U.S., Whitman stated, “The American people have spoken, and a new president will be inaugurated in January. I wish him and his team success.” She confirmed that Chargé d’Affaires Marc Dillard would assume leadership at the embassy, ensuring continuity in advancing U.S.-Kenya bilateral goals.

Concluding her remarks, Whitman expressed confidence in the enduring strength of the U.S.-Kenya partnership: “Our 60 years of friendship will only grow stronger, serving both Americans and Kenyans as we work towards more prosperous, healthy, secure, and democratic futures. The relationship between our nations is solid, and I am confident it will continue to flourish.”
