Ecological Requirements for Growing Passion Fruit

  • Temperature: 18-25°C for purple passion fruit and 25-30°C for yellow passion fruit.
  • Altitude: 1200-2000 meters above sea level.
  • Rainfall: 900mm to 2000mm of well-distributed rainfall annually.
  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5-6.5.

Land Preparation

  • Preparation Time: Land should be prepared 2-3 months before planting.
  • Ploughing: Deep ploughing is necessary to ensure proper aeration of the soil.

Planting and Propagation

  • Spacing: Planting holes should be 45cm wide and 45cm deep with 2 meters between plants and 3 meters between rows.
  • Grafting: Grafting is encouraged to prevent soil-borne diseases like Fusarium wilt and to improve yields.

Fertilizer Application

  • Before Transplanting: Fill planting holes with farmyard manure mixed with double superphosphate (125 grams).
  • Topdressing: Apply CAN fertilizer one month after transplanting.
  • Foliar Fertilizers: Spray plants with foliar fertilizers every 3 months until maturity.

Pests and Diseases Management

  • Pests: Common pests include nematodes, red spider mites, aphids, mealy bugs, fruit flies, thrips, and stink bugs. Pesticides like Fastal, Karate, Mitac, and Dynamic can be used to control these pests.
  • Diseases: Common diseases include Fusarium wilt, blight, brown spot, and woodiness virus. These can be managed through proper field hygiene and fungicide applications, such as Ridomil and Dacomil.

Farm Practices

  1. Pruning: Essential for allowing the growth of new, fruit-bearing vines.
  2. Trelling: Use posts and wire to support the vines. The posts should be 2.7 meters high, 15cm in diameter, and spaced 6 meters apart. This supports vertical vine growth.

Harvesting

Passion fruits typically start bearing fruit 8-12 months after planting. The peak harvest season in Kenya is during July-August and December-January.
