Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been impeached, with 53 senators voting to uphold the first charge against him, making him the first deputy president in Kenya’s history to face impeachment. The motion was introduced by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, who presented 11 charges, including gross constitutional violations, undermining the President, irregular wealth acquisition, and promoting ethnicity.
The National Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of the impeachment, with 281 MPs supporting the motion, while only 44 opposed. Gachagua’s legal team walked out in protest after the Senate refused to extend the hearing, citing his absence due to illness. His lead lawyer, Paul Muite, informed the Senate that Gachagua was hospitalized at Karen Hospital with severe chest pains.
