Studying in the United Kingdom continues to attract thousands of Kenyan students each year. However, before you can begin your studies, you must understand exactly how the UK student visa process works and follow every step correctly.

Therefore, this guide explains how to apply for a UK student visa from Kenya using a clear, practical checklist. In addition, it highlights common mistakes, costs, timelines, and requirements so you can submit a strong, error-free application.Study & Work: Student Jobs in Europe (2025 Guide)

What Is a UK Student Visa?

A UK Student Visa allows international students aged 16 and above to study at licensed UK institutions. Importantly, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) issues this visa only to applicants who meet strict academic, financial, and credibility requirements.Europe Student Visa Requirements by Country (2025)

Once approved, the visa usually covers the full length of your course and includes a short post-study period.

Eligibility Requirements for Kenyan Students

Before you apply, you must confirm that you meet all UKVI eligibility conditions. Otherwise, your application may be refused.

  • You hold an unconditional offer from a UK-licensed sponsor
  • You have received a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
  • You can demonstrate sufficient financial support
  • You meet the English language requirement
  • You intend to study genuinely in the UK

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Apply for a UK Student Visa from Kenya

Step 1: Secure Admission from a UK University

First, apply directly to UK universities or through UCAS. Once the institution accepts you, it will issue a CAS. Without this document, you cannot proceed with the visa application.

Step 2: Review Your CAS Carefully

Next, check all details on your CAS, including your name, passport number, course title, and fees. If you spot an error, request a correction immediately because UKVI relies heavily on this information.

Step 3: Prepare the Complete Document Checklist

At this stage, gather all required documents. Importantly, missing or inconsistent paperwork often leads to delays or refusals.

Required documents include:

  • A valid passport
  • CAS reference number
  • Academic certificates and transcripts
  • English language test results, where applicable
  • Proof of funds
  • UK-approved tuberculosis (TB) test certificate

Step 4: Understand the Proof of Funds Requirement

In addition to tuition fees, you must prove that you can support yourself financially while studying in the UK.

  • Outstanding tuition fees for the first academic year
  • Living costs of £1,334 per month for up to nine months

Crucially, you must hold these funds for at least 28 consecutive days in a regulated bank account. Otherwise, UKVI will reject your application.

Step 5: Complete a UK-Approved TB Test in Kenya

Because Kenya is on the UK’s TB testing list, you must take a tuberculosis test at an approved clinic before submitting your visa application. As a result, you should schedule this early to avoid delays.

Step 6: Submit the Online Visa Application

After preparing your documents, complete the online application through the official UK government visa portal. During this step, you will upload documents, review declarations, and select a biometric appointment.

Step 7: Pay the Visa Fee and Immigration Health Surcharge

Next, you must pay all required fees before booking biometrics.

  • UK Student Visa fee: £490
  • Immigration Health Surcharge: £776 per year of study

Once paid, these fees allow you access to the UK’s National Health Service during your stay.

Step 8: Attend Your Biometrics Appointment in Nairobi

After payment, attend your biometric appointment at the Visa Application Centre in Nairobi. At this stage, staff will capture your fingerprints and photograph.

Step 9: Wait for the Visa Decision

Finally, wait for a decision. Standard processing usually takes around three weeks. However, priority services may shorten this timeline for an additional fee.

Common Reasons UK Student Visa Applications Are Refused

Although many Kenyan students receive approvals, refusals still occur. Therefore, understanding common mistakes can help you avoid them.

  • Insufficient or incorrectly held funds
  • Unclear academic progression
  • Inconsistent information across documents
  • Poor credibility during interviews, where applicable

Consequently, accuracy, honesty, and preparation remain essential throughout the process.

Can Kenyan Students Work in the UK on a Student Visa?

Yes. In most cases, UK student visa holders can work legally while studying.

  • Up to 20 hours per week during term time
  • Full-time during official holidays

However, restrictions apply to self-employment and certain job categories.

What Happens After Your Visa Is Approved?

Once UKVI approves your visa, you will receive an entry vignette in your passport. After arriving in the UK, you must collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) from the designated location.

Importantly, you should complete this step within the specified timeframe to remain compliant with immigration rules.
