Jack stands are essential tools for vehicle maintenance, providing a stable and secure way to lift your car off the ground. Whether you’re changing tires, inspecting the undercarriage, or performing more complex repairs, knowing how to use jack stands correctly is crucial for safety. This guide will walk you through every step, from lifting your vehicle to safely removing the stands when you’re done.

Why Use Jack Stands?

A car jack alone can lift your vehicle, but it isn’t stable enough for working underneath. Jack stands offer a solid base, significantly reducing the risk of accidents. They can support the full weight of the vehicle, ensuring you can work safely and confidently.

Part 1: Lifting Your Vehicle

Step 1: Find a Flat Surface

  • Work on a level, stable surface such as a garage floor or a driveway.
  • Avoid uneven, gravelly, or sloped surfaces where the stands could shift.

Step 2: Engage the Parking Brake

  • Activate your parking brake to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
  • Use wheel chocks or wooden blocks around the tires that remain on the ground for added security.

Step 3: Position the Floor Jack

  • Locate the vehicle’s designated lifting points. Refer to your owner’s manual for their exact location.
  • Slide a hydraulic floor jack under the lift point and ensure it’s properly aligned.

Step 4: Lift the Vehicle

  • Pump the jack handle to raise the vehicle until the tire is about 2–3 inches off the ground.
  • Avoid lifting the car higher than necessary, as it can become unstable.

Part 2: Placing the Jack Stands

Step 1: Locate the Pinch Points

  • Pinch points are typically located just behind the front wheels or in front of the rear wheels.
  • For vehicles without pinch points, place the stands under the frame or another sturdy section.

Step 2: Position the Jack Stand

  • Slide the jack stand under the pinch point or frame. Ensure the stand’s divot aligns with the contact point.
  • If your stand has an adjustable height, extend it until it touches the vehicle securely, then lock it in place with the safety pin.

Step 3: Lower the Vehicle Onto the Stand

  • Slowly lower the vehicle by turning the floor jack lever counterclockwise.
  • Ensure the vehicle’s weight is evenly distributed on the jack stand.

Step 4: Check Stability

  • Gently push the vehicle to confirm it’s stable.
  • If the stand shifts or the car wobbles, reposition the stand before working underneath the vehicle.

Step 5: Use Additional Stands for Full Lifts

  • Repeat the process on the other side if you need to lift the entire front or rear of the vehicle.
  • Ensure the stands on both sides are at the same height for stability.

Part 3: Removing the Jack Stands

Step 1: Raise the Vehicle Slightly

  • Place the floor jack back under the lift point and raise the vehicle about 1 inch above the jack stand.

Step 2: Remove the Stand

  • Slide the jack stand out from under the vehicle carefully.
  • Avoid crawling directly under the car while removing the stand.

Step 3: Lower the Vehicle

  • Slowly lower the jack by turning the lever counterclockwise.
  • Ensure the tires are fully on the ground before removing the jack completely.

Step 4: Repeat for Additional Stands

  • If you used multiple stands, remove them one at a time, starting from the front if the entire car was lifted.

Tips for Using Jack Stands

  1. Check Weight Ratings:
    • Verify the jack stands can support your vehicle’s weight. Most stands have a maximum capacity printed on them.
  2. Inspect Your Tools:
    • Ensure both the jack and the stands are in good condition, free of cracks or rust.
  3. Keep the Jack Nearby:
    • For added safety, keep the floor jack in place after lowering the vehicle onto the stands.
  4. Avoid Improvised Tools:
    • Never use bricks, wooden blocks, or other unstable objects in place of jack stands.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping the Parking Brake: Always engage the parking brake to prevent movement.
  • Incorrect Placement: Using the wrong lift points can damage the vehicle or cause the stands to slip.
  • Insufficient Stability Checks: Failing to test the car’s stability before working underneath can lead to accidents.

Conclusion

Using jack stands properly is essential for safe vehicle maintenance. By following these steps, you can securely lift your car, complete your repairs, and safely remove the stands when done. With the right tools and techniques, you’ll ensure both your safety and your vehicle’s integrity during any repair job.
