Wafula Chebukati, the erstwhile IEBC Chairman, died at the age of 64. The family says he died at 11 p.m. last night at the Nairobi Hospital, having spent the last few days in the hospital in a critical condition.
Reports suggest he battled cancer and received care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the point he passed.
Chebukati served as IEBC chairperson throughout the six-year period, retiring in January 2023 having overseen the 2022 General Election. It was characterised by significant election issues, reforms, and scandal, most significantly the 2017 and 2022 disputed polls.
Further details about the funeral arrangements and the official words from the family and the government are expected.
