San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan gave Mac Jones the news many expected throughout the week: Brock Purdy is healthy and ready to reclaim the starting quarterback role. The decision came ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, marking the end of Jones’ eight-game stretch leading the offense during Purdy’s recovery from turf toe.
Shanahan Praises Jones for Stabilizing the Season
Although typically measured with praise, Shanahan made a point to acknowledge Jones’ impact. Before Thursday’s practice, he called Jones into his office to thank him for the way he performed in Purdy’s absence. The conversation was brief, but meaningful.
According to Shanahan, Jones responded with enthusiasm, telling him he enjoyed the experience and was ready to help the team from the scout team and in any future opportunities. The coach later shared the exchange publicly, crediting Jones for his professionalism and his role in keeping the team competitive.
Jones’ Performance Helped Keep the 49ers in Contention
Purdy returns to the starting lineup with the 49ers sitting at 6-4, a position that might not have been possible without Jones’ steady play. During Purdy’s recovery, San Francisco went 5-3. Even in the losses, Jones remained poised, completing nearly 70 percent of his passes for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
His performance ensured the 49ers avoided the uncertainty and offensive struggles they experienced in past seasons when injuries derailed quarterback depth. The franchise remembers the consequences vividly, particularly the 2022 NFC Championship Game loss when Purdy’s elbow injury left the offense without a reliable replacement.
A New Start After Difficult Years Elsewhere
Jones, who spent three challenging seasons in New England and one in Jacksonville, has described his time in San Francisco as rejuvenating. He signed a two-year deal with the team to rediscover his confidence, not to chase a short-term contract like other past 49ers backups.
He has consistently said his priority is team success and enjoying the game again. The opportunity to lead the offense for half a season helped him reestablish his value, even if his future as a starter elsewhere remains uncertain.
The 49ers are unlikely to move on from Jones in 2026 unless a significant trade offer emerges, given the importance of maintaining quarterback depth through the long season.
Purdy Returns for a Critical Stretch
Purdy has missed 12 of the last 18 games due to a series of injuries, including shoulder, elbow, rib, and toe issues. Despite his recovery, Shanahan noted that there are no guarantees about long-term durability. Jones’ continued presence offers stability, especially if Purdy faces setbacks later in the season.
Still, Shanahan expressed enthusiasm about Purdy’s return, saying the quarterback had his strongest week of practice in months and looked fully ready to lead the offense again.
Pearsall Nears Return After PCL Strain
Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, who has been sidelined for six games with a PCL strain, is also nearing a return. His injury occurred on the same night Purdy left the field in Week 4. Before going down, Pearsall recorded 20 catches for 327 yards and served as the team’s primary big-play threat.
He acknowledged the recovery took longer than expected but said he finally feels close to full speed. Teammate Jauan Jennings welcomed the development, noting that Pearsall’s presence draws defensive attention and creates opportunities for others in the receiving group.
Looking Ahead to Arizona
With Purdy back under center and key playmakers returning, the 49ers enter Sunday’s meeting with the Cardinals in stronger shape than they have been in weeks. Jones steps back into the background, but his contributions during Purdy’s absence remain a pivotal part of why San Francisco remains firmly in the playoff hunt.
He now resumes his role as a dependable insurance option while embracing the renewed joy and purpose he has found with the 49ers organization.
